A club was formed in July, 1975, by Frances Hudson, Lillian Macres, and Ruth Treadway for the purpose of exchanging information on raising dairy goats. The first meeting was held July 12, 1975, at the home of Ruth Treadway with 12 dairy goat owners present. On October 18, 1975, the name Smoky Mountain Dairy Goat Association was chosen for the Club.
The purpose of this associatin is to promote goats in general and dairy goats in particular. We strive for improvement both in the genetic quality and care of our animals. To accomplish this we serve as a clearing house for information so that each member's understanding of goats may be advanced. We serve as encouragement to one another in our goat raising endeavors and are unified and unselfish in service to our organization.
IN LOVING MEMORY
The SMDGA is saddened to lose one of our greatest members, Anne-Marie Begley. For the past 30+ year Anne-Maire raised Saanen, Sable, and Oberhasli goats. One of her greatest loves was animals and she was always there to help answer any goat related questions. She was a very active member of the SMDGA and helped us to coordinate many shows. Anne-Marie will be greatly missed and the SMDGA will not be the same without her. In Anne-Marie's memory, we have decided to name our May show The Anne-Maire Begley Memorial Show.
